Information report /stomach ulcer

IIntroduction
A stomach or peptic ulcer is a break in the tissue lining of the stomach. It is a common disease. "Stomach ulcers occur when the thick layer of mucus that protects your stomach from digestive juices is reduced. This allows the digestive acids to eat away at the tissues that line the stomach, causing an ulcer" (Shannon Johnson 2017). The aim of this report is to provide information about stomach ulcers. It will first look at symptoms, then causes, treatment and diagnosis of stomach cancer.

Causes
Helicobacter pylori bacteria is the main cause of stomach ulcers. In old time ago, stress, lifestyle, diet, and smoking were considered as the main causes of stomach ulcers. However, according to ABC (2017), in 2005, two Australian scientists, Dr. Marshall and Dr. Warren, were awarded the Nobel prize for medicine for they discovered that a bacterial infection causes the major cases of stomach ulcers. "Helicobacter pylori - bacteria is thought to be responsible for around 60 percent of stomach ulcers and at least 90 percent of duodenal ulcers."(betterhealth 2014). In some cases, infection with these bacteria may develop a stomach cancer.

 Others stomach ulcers causes include:
·         Certain medications – non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen.
·          Cancer –sometimes, especially in elderly people, stomach ulcer in its fact is a stomach cancer.

.Symptoms
There are many symptoms of stomach ulcers. Many people with stomach ulcers do not have any symptoms, but this disease can cause several symptoms which are different in its severity.
These symptoms include:
•  Pain- the patient suffers from abdominal pain just under the ribcage. This pain is harder with empty stomach and continue for a few minutes to several hours
•  Heartburn- which causes a burning feeling in chest
•  Indigestion
•  Loss of appetite
•  Nausea
•  Vomiting
•  Weight loss
•  Feeling full and bloated
•  Not being able to stand fatty foods
•  Burping or acid reflux
•  Anemia which causes (feeling tired, shortness of breath, or paler skin)

In some cases, serious complications may be caused by stomach ulcers such as vomiting blood or blood in the stool. Bleeding ulcers may lead to trauma which is a medical emergency may threaten patient life.

Treatment
Doctors may describe diverse treatments for patients with stomach ulcers according to the causes of stomach ulcers.
These treatments could include:
·          Medications -  which may contain:
1- A mixture of antibiotic medicines to kill the Helicobacter pylori bacteria.
2- Medications to decrease the stomach acid.
·          Repeating breath tests - are very important to be sure that the treatment is successful in destroying the bacteria.
·           Change used medicines -it is necessary to either reduce the amount of the medication which may cause stomach ulcer or stop using it.
·          Lifestyle modifications - changes such as stop smoking which normally reduce the natural defenses could be useful to increase the healing speed.
·           Following special diet has a limited effect in a treat or heal stomach ulcers but stop some kinds of food such as spicy food which may make the symptoms worse seems to be helpful.
·          Surgical treatment – the most cases of stomach ulcers can be treated by taking medication, but in some situations such as actively bleeding ulcers, a surgery may be required and blood transfusion could be necessary as well.

Conclusion
To conclude, a stomach ulcer is an infection that can attack a stomach. There can be many symptoms such as pain, weight loss, bleeding in some serious cases most but sometimes there are no symptoms. The most common cause of stomach ulcers is Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Treatment involves medication, surgery, lifestyle modification. Diagnoses can be through many methods such as endoscopy, breath test, and barium meal.
